The History Of CBD Oil
Welcome to the ultimate CBD Hemp oil guide brought to you by Prime Spectrum CBD Oil Ireland. Before I explain what CBD Oil is the types of CBD there is you should know the following. CBD stands for Cannabidiol and if you are reading this you heard of this word CAN-NA-BID-I-OL. All across Europe, this product is becoming extremely popular however there are many stigmas associated with it. It is just one cannabinoid that is produced by the cannabis plant and it is quickly growing in popularity. CBD oil is in a variety of products already. Some of the more popular ones are in our shop, from tincture drops, capsules, balms, honey as well as a range of bars. CBD oil is even becoming popular among pet owners who wish to help their pets live healthier lives.
Before we dive into the present and future let’s look at the past to get an idea of when and where CBD was first discovered and used. All of the following is widely available from multiple sources and it truly does show that CBD is clearly NOT a Novel food.
Ancient CBD Products
Cannabis first appeared on record in writing around 6000 B.C in China however its use as a form of medicine or wellbeing began to appear around 2700 B.C. It was used as topical ointments and teas and as civilization progressed hemp began to appear in pharmacopeias across Asia. The Romans started using it for discomfort and in their healing around A.D 77. From Rome to India cannabis was found and in India, it was considered to be a plant given by the Gods.
A book called The Atharvaveda was considered to be the go-to place for knowledge and it was used daily. Here there are details of the cannabis flowers, tinctures, and a selection of balms being used. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians were found buried with cannabis remedies.
CBD Oil In Europe
During 16th-century cannabis was being farmed and around Europe. It was considered so valuable that King of England made it a law that all farmers had to grow it. The doctors of the age where using it to maintain health. It reaches the American colonies in the 1600s where it also was grown by law. Hemp seeds were considered a form of cash and it was used to pay for goods and services.
Medical textbooks and pharmacopoeias of the day during the 18th century all record the use and benefits of Cannabis for various reasons such as mood. During the Industrial age, hemp extracts were experimented on animals and humans to treat rheumatic diseases, cholera, tetanus, and hydrophobia
CBD Oil in Modern Times
During the 20th-century opioids were developed and the use of cannabis-based options began to decline and pharmaceuticals were becoming advertised. By the 1930s there was an illegal war being placed on Cannabis by a man called Harry Anslinger. Prohibition had just ended and he was head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. He was afraid that his job and his department would lose their position and role in society.
30 scientists were approached for proof that Cannabis was harmful and they all said no apart from one. He then used this person and he started his war by stating:
- You will turn into a wild beast
- This is demons weed
- You will fall into a delirious rage
This combined with the greed of pharmaceutical companies and their opioids was a tough fight to win. Due to its diversity for the use as a paper and other materials, other larger companies placed their hat into the war and by the 1930s the farming was illegal. In the 1970s you could not be in possession of it in any form and it was considered a Controlled Substances as Schedule I.
Is CBD Legal?
There are many to this day that still ignore the mountain of evidence that shows CBD and Cannabis are not Novel Foods. In 1996, the state of California legalized the use of cannabis for the treatment of certain medical conditions, despite a federal ban.
There is a vast amount of research on CBD and Cannabis and it is widely seen as having medical benefits for people. The Pharmaceutical industry is trying to get in on the trade and kick out the small business by portraying they are the only ones who can create and supply Cannabis. It seems things are starting to come full circle once again and people are wising up to Cannabis and CBD.
Cannabis is one of a genus of plants known as Cannabaceae. There are two main species of cannabis that are cultivated for human consumption, namely Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa. Sativa plants are taller and produce more fiber and are therefore the species from which hemp cultivation arose. Indica plants are shorter and bushier and less suitable for farming for either industrial purposes or for production of food, but well-suited for producing medical marijuana.
Summary Of CBD Oil
We should have a clearer picture now and to keep it a bit simpler we will use the Industry norm phraseology. Cannabis is referred to by this name if it has levels of THC (the part of the plant that is responsible for getting people high or stoned) above 0.3% in the USA and 0.2% in the EU. If this 1 Cannabinoid( Out of 100 odd ) has a reading of below 0.3%/0.2% THC then it is classed as a HEMP and deemed legal. Hemp is made up of all the other cannabinoids, terpenes (unsung heroes in my opinion) flavinoids, and other items with one Cannabinoid at a different level, THC.
There is still a lot of confusion out there as early last year(2019) suppliers were selling CBD products with 0.2% THC. EU law allowed licensed farmers to grow Sativa Hemp ( Commonly known as Industrial Hemp) at levels of 0.2% THC. This law did not translate to CBD products. In Ireland, THC is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Acts 1977 and as of May 2019. There is zero-tolerance to this Cannabinoid being over the limit. Meaning you can grow Hemp as long as it has a THC level below 0.2%. When you manufacture it for consumption in Ireland all the THC must be removed. No CBD product on the market should have any amount of THC in it what so ever.
Types Of CBD Oil Products In Ireland
I already discussed the types of CBD Oil in another post. If you have no looked it this you should as it will give you a great insight into what types of CBD Products are available you. You will find that post HERE so read away and come back to this then.
There are many people selling CBD products in Ireland and the CBD market is catching up to the UK market. That being the Irish Government in Ireland sadly are fighting to push these companies out of business. They would rather see big Pharma growing. They ignore the overwhelming positive evidence and the potential that the Hemp / CBD industry could have.
Raw CBD Oil vs. CBD Oil Concentrate
The plant is grown and once it reaches maturity it is then harvested. It is taken out of the ground and let in a drying room to be cured. After this process is complete the oils can be extracted and when this is done for the first time it’s known as being RAW. This raw extract can be put through a series of filtration and distillation processes to remove unwanted compounds, such as waxes and chlorophyll. When these are left in, in greater volume it gives a darker and a more bitter taste. There are various ways to produce the end product and some are more expensive than others.
In my opinion the more detailed the process the better quality the oil. Some prefer the black look and taste however for me I would rather see all the unnecessary waxes and chlorophyll removed. I much prefer a better tasting and more refined oil that has better bioavailability and this is extremely important. It more expensive to produce but the end result s better and it also provides more consistency. These refined oils are referred to as CBD concentrate CBD distillate.
CBD Oil Products
To summarize, there are a variety of CBD or Hemp products on the market worldwide. They all contain varying levels of CBD as well as other cannabinoids and terpenes. It is important that you understand what you are getting. All companies will claim they have the best products and some will mix fact with fiction. It can be hard to know what is what and many have made the mistake of buying a product simply because they saw the word “HEMP” or “CBD” This is not the best way to select your product or brand. The list that follows will give you a little more insight as to why not all CBD-Hemp products are made equal.
Terms Used To Describe CBD Oil Products
- Hemp seed oil — Oil produced from hemp seeds, does not contain CBD.
- Raw industrial hemp extract — A low-quality source of CBD oil.
- Raw PCR hemp extract — A high quality full/broad-spectrum product containing naturally occurring compounds including cannabinoids and terpenes.
- CBD concentrate or distillate — A full/broad-spectrum product where unwanted compounds have been removed.
- CBD isolate — Purified CBD that does not contain other beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids.
- CBD-rich oil/Phytocannabinoid-rich (PCR) — Either full spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD concentrate or oil infused with CBD concentrate.
- Broad-spectrum oil — An oil rich in CBD and the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes present with no THC.
- CBD-infused — Generally refers to a product infused with pure CBD, but is also used sometimes to refer to a full spectrum product.
The Endocannabinoid System – ECS
The ECS consists of receptors that are found on the surface of the cells and the endocannabinoids that interact with these receptors. Anandamide and 2AG are both cannabinoids that are produced by the body. Anandamide helps with the production and absorption of serotonin. Serotonin is directly responsible for mood and often referred to as the bliss molecule. Without this cannabinoid Anandamide, our mood would be very off. It would explain why when we introduce other cannabinoids from a good source that our mood elevates.
Our ECS is very far-reaching within or bodies and without it, we would not survive. It regulates an array of bodily functions from, the immune response, the lifespan of cells, metabolism, appetite regulation to sleep patterns, moods, and much more. This is why it is so important to maintain our ECS correctly. It is also why people don’t believe CBD and Cannabis work. They find it hard to believe one item can help and do so much. We find it hard to understand how one thing could help will so much and how it could have such a massive positive impact on our physical and mental health.
The Role Of Endocannabinoids
They are signalling molecules or neurotransmitters and they are part of an array that our nervous system uses to keep out health in balance. They interact with the receptors that are located on the surface of our cells. The cells receive instructions to do various things and they adjust their activities. They interact with receptors found on the surface of cells throughout our bodies. Their job is to instruct a cell to adjust its activities to do more or less of what it is designed to do.
Our brains will act as best it can to maintain balance depending on the internal and external factors. The brain is not connected to every cell in the body and it is told what is going on by the various systems. Your immune system is connected to many sensors in the body and it receives information from the cells. If your body is under attack the cells will send out signals and your immune system and nervous system will pick these up. They will then send signals to the brain and it will decode these signals. Your brain will then tell the immune system and nervous system to produce neurotransmitters, which travel through the bloodstream and interact with receptors on cells, instructing them to adjust their behaviour to tackle the response.
When Was The Endocannabinoid System Discovered
The endocannabinoid system was discovered in phases. In 1988, the first cannabinoid receptor was found in the brain of a rat and from here in 1992, researcher Raphael Mechoulam and his fellow scientists discovered the first endocannabinoid. He also synthesized CBD and carried out the first study on how it interacted with epilepsy suffers. He carried out numerous other studies including how asthma suffers interact with CBD. Israel as a country encourages scientists and producers to engage more in the development of the plant and its uses. To this day Israel leads the way in research in this area.
What Is The Entourage Effect
When you have high-end quality CBD Hemp products you are getting a vast array of natural compounds that have varied Cannabinoids and Terpenes. These work together as a whole and this is known as “The Entourage Effect”. A lot more research is needed is already accepted the following do not work as well with your body-
- PURE CBD
- ISOLATED CBD
- ISOLATE INFUSED.
They may sound like they would be of great benefit however they are cheaper to produce and are not as potent or as effective on for your body. To conclude CBD and Cannabis could have a massive impact on your health. You should not underestimate what CBD could do for you if taken correctly and consistently.
The History Hemp Research
As far back as 1968 it has been found and stated that Cannabis taken in moderation is less dangerous than Amphetamines, Opiates, Barbiturates, and alcohol. Yes, alcohol is a drug and a dangerous one that we accept. The U.S.A in 1970 put Marijuana was a class I substance and stated it had no medical or health benefits. President Richard Nixon rejected a report given to him by the department of health. Then in 1976 a man called Robert Randall went before a federal judge and won his case to use Cannabis for medical benefits. Robert won the court battle and was officially declared the first legal medical cannabis patient. Other legal patients followed and the research into Cannabis rolled on.
How Do You Take CBD?
If you are keeping up with this tread you will understand why not all CBD products are the same. The same can be said when it comes to using CBD as not all methods are equal. How your body is able to use what you give it depends on a number of factors from your own metabolism to your age and weight. CBD effectiveness depends on how well the product was made to the method of consumption.
Another huge factor is the bio-availability of the CBD in conjunction with the method you take your CBD. The bio-availability of something is the percentage of something taken that ends up being used by your body. We can’t underestimate how important this is when you are selecting a product or brand.
Bio-availability Of CBD
Something that would be given to you through injection would get into your bloodstream directly and thus would be considered to be 100% bio-available. Every other method has factors that lower this percentage. This is definitely something you need to factor in your buying process.
If you buy a CBD product that has been sourced from a poor strain, planted, grown poorly, and or manufactured poorly you could be starting off with a bio-availability as low as 70%. Depending on the method used to consume the CBD product this could drop further to 40%. This means you would need more of the product to have the desired effect you require. This is just one of the reasons why you should buy your CBD from a reliable and traceable source. In the long run, a poor CBD product actually costs you a heck of a lot more, and when it comes to CBD the quality of the product matters greatly.
CBD Oil Tinctures
These are liquids with an oil or alcohol base that has been infused with CBD. The oil or alcohol base is considered the carrier or the means by which the CBD is transferred to your body. It is taken in the mouth under the tongue and can be absorbed very well this way. Taken CBD this way is twice as affected as edibles. You should note a poor carrier equals poor bio-availability. Also, the correct term for these products is CBD Tinctures and you may also see Hemp Tinctures. You will see that being referred to as CBD Oil Tinctures as it seems to be more market-friendly.
If you follow us here at Prime Spectrum CBD, you would know that dosage is key as no two people are the same because everyone’s genetics are different. Age, health along with the number of receptors has an effect. You need to understand that someone who has more receptors but produces fewer endocannabinoids may be more sensitive when compared to someone with more endocannabinoids or a lack of receptors. This is why I ask to work with each client to find a suggested dose and strength that works for them.
How Much CBD Oil Do I Take?
As stated before the concentration and the quality of the CBD product along with other mentioned factors affect bioavailability. Following FSAI guidelines CBD suppliers are required to provide a recommended dose. Some go to the extreme of stating a higher does and others recommend starting low and slow. Prime Spectrum always advocate that you get in touch with us. When we know the basics about you and why you want to use CBD, we can then recommended the strength and dose to suit your needs.
The most important things to remember are the quality of the product with have a massive impact on the dosage. Dosage is key and without this, you will take too little and see no desired effects or too much and end up spending a fortune on the incorrect strength. Also, keep in mind what we said in the last post. A good CBD product will have a good CBD and Terpene profile. You can learn more about CBD DOSAGE and how to take these products by clicking HERE.
CBD Dosage Guide
It is pretty easy to determine how much CBD you are taking if you are using a capsule. You would know how much CBD is in the capsule and from here you can work out what is best for you. With a Tincture, it can be slightly more difficult and inhalation is harder again. You have to look at how much you inhale and how deeply. These should be things you take into consideration as well as brand and product suggestions.
How Long Does It Take For CBD To Work
Eating a CBD infused edibles would take longer for the CBD to impact your body compared to inhaled methods. Edibles need to go through the stomach, upper and lower intestine whereas the inhaled method gets into the bloodstream through the lungs a lot quicker. The numbers are subjective however edibles can take 30 mins to an hour while Tinctures take up to 20 mins and inhaled it is almost instantaneous. How long these products stay in your system varies. The factors that determine this are the quality of the products to the person taking them.
Stick With Your CBD Oil Brand
We have seen it all too often, people switching from one product to another and one supplier to another. Research it and when you decide to choose a company and a product, stick with it for a while. We have helped numerous people use other brands. They had loads of a product left but they did not know how to find the dose that suits them and they gave up. If it’s a reputable brand we have no issue helping you use it. The persons’ welfare and the CBD industry as a whole are more important than money. Finding that sweet spot takes time and you are unique. Let us help you use our products as you are paying for a service as well as CBD products. It is YOUR money so don’t waste it.
What Ways To Take CBD?
- Your lifestyle
- The desired outcome you want from CBD
- Bioavailability of the chosen method.
If you are in an office all day it might not be a good idea to inhale CBD. People who travel a lot might not like to use something that could spill or break easily. If you are using CBD for high anxiety and lack of sleep it might be a good idea to look at an oil during the day and a capsule for the night. It would be no good to take a topical for this. If you suffer from panic attacks it would recommend you use a tincture or vape so you get the quickest reaction and the possible attack can be controlled. A capsule, in this case, may not be effective for you. This is again why we always suggest you get in touch with us to fill us in on your situation.
How Do I Buy High-Quality CBD Oil?
The CBD market in Ireland is at a very young stage and we are around 5 years behind the USA as of 2019. Unfortunately, along with good companies, bad ones are getting in on the trend through social media and running down the industry. Many of them will do anything to cut corners and increase profit margins. Some are completely dishonest, selling so-called CBD oil products that have negligible amounts of CBD in them, or even none whatsoever is can be very hard to distinguish the good from the bad. We all heard of the Celtic Wind Crop scandal that still has not gone away as of 2020. Others are selling poor volumes of good products at extremely overpriced rates. Expensive does not always mean good quality.
You need someone you can trust to provide you with safe consistent products. Many in the Irish consumers do not realize that a lot of the brands actually come from the same source. People buying the same product with different names on it and they don’t realise. It is hard to know a good company from a bad one. If the site looks good etc then how are you to know if they are any good.
CBD Oil Supplier In Ireland
A good supplier should be able to answer anything and everything about their product. If they can’t or they will not answer your questions, alarm bells should be ringing. A few things they should be able to hot a home run on are –
- The variety of hemp used to make the product.
- Where the hemp was grown. What country etc
- How the product was grown. Indoors or out, pots or plots.
- The method of extraction used to produce the raw hemp extract. Was it cold press or CO2 extraction, food-grade ethanol, or a mixture.
- Type of facility that is used and the name of the company.
- Other ingredients that may have been used such as the carrier.
- They should have Certificates of Analysis to show the Cannabinoid and terpene profiles. If a company goes to the expense of making sure Terpenes are preserved you can be sure they will test for them also.
A reputable company will gladly provide this information. If it’s not on their website, then you can use their contact form to inquire about all the questions you have. CBD is not cheap so put a bit of work into knowing what you are placing into your body.
Preferred Hemp Sources In Ireland
Hemp is cultivated all over the world however in the EU it is restricted to one type of Hemp which is Sativa or Industrial hemp. This puts a great restriction on the Irish and the EU market. Industrial hemp is primarily grown for its seeds and fibers and is not bred to produce high levels of cannabinoids and terpenes. Phyto cannabinoid rich hemp/PCR hemp is specifically cultivated to be rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. It is one of the reasons why I have avoided the products form the EU and went directly to the USA. The USA produces some of the finest quality cannabis and hemp products in the world. In terms of experience, the climate, and the manufacturing facilities they are ahead of the curve.
Products that try to come close to the standard of PCR Hemp products need to be refined further. Its quality is reduced by this and the CBD and Terpene profile is reduced. Sorry to say it but this means the majority of the Irish market simply is a lower standard of CBD product.
CBD Oil Product Ingredients
Hemp seed oil, Coconut oil ( MCT oil which is easier for the body to use), and almond oil are the preferred oils used as carriers for the CBD. These are used as they have good health benefits. Some companies will use other oils to cut corners so this is another way to determine the quality of the overall product. Like any food packaging label, if you read something on the label and you can’t pronounce it then it is more than likely a chemical.
Quality Testing Of CBD Oil
Third-party lab testing should be a must and any serious manufactures will have these done. As stated above they want to make sure that they are producing what they are saying. There also want to make sure there are no nasty surprises such as pesticides or contaminants. It also ensures that the consistency of the products they are being produced have the required concentration. As you are aware the THC levels in any CBD products sold in Ireland are very important and you can’t have a hot product in Ireland. This is extremely important and there is no room for error as the 15 companies being sold in Ireland this year found out. This will all be carried out and provided from batch to batch and not just randomly.
Dangers of Synthetic Cannabinoids
Thankfully this is not a major issue here yet however I have seen some other examples that would make your eyes water. Synthetic CBD is very dangerous and many of been seriously ill from taking them. This type of CBD was produced in a laboratory and not from a plant. Extremely dangerous.
- Know why you want to take CBD. Understand the desired effects you want.
- Ask your supplier about the product and they should be able to answer you.
- Explain to them why you wish to take CBD and they should help you with a suggested dosage.
- If in doubt start low and slow and or consult a doctor.
- Look to make sure they are a registered company.
- Look for laboratory reports.
